MK6465GSX 640GB Hard Drive – Toshiba
Toshiba has made public the launch of its latest high-performance hard drive. Dubbed as the MK6465GSX, this 2.5” laptop hard drive is claimed to be the industry’s largest hard drive to date. With the drive roping in a capacity of 640GB, we are not a bit surprised with the company’s claim.
Previously, most laptop hard drives boasted of not more than 500GB capacity, but this notion is about to change with this novel drive adding another 140GB to its storage space. The Toshiba creation spinning at 5400RPMs also comes in 500GB, 320GB, 250GB and 160GB models.
“IDC estimates in its study of the expanding digital universe that 36.5 terabytes of data will be generated per second by 2010,” shared John Rydning, research director at IDC. “A significant portion of the digital content being generated needs to be stored in homes and small businesses efficiently. With advances in 2.5-inch capacity and technology, Toshiba’s new 2.5-inch form factor HDD provides a good combination of capacity, mobility and low-power consumption for portable devices, and increasingly for applications traditionally served by larger form factor HDDs.”
“These new high-capacity 2.5-inch HDDs provide benefits for both notebook and desktop applications,” commented Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba Storage Device Division. “Not only do they continue to close the performance gap between notebooks and desktops, they also provide a perfect alternative to 3.5-inch HDDs in desktop and POS applications requiring energy efficiency and reliability in a smaller footprint.”
Dressed in Liquid Blue, Vivid White, Rocket Red and Komodo Green, this USB-powered hard drive offers its users a range of color choices. Furthermore, this 2.5” hard drive also flaunts the free-fall sensor option. With the company’s new 320GB-per-platter design, reduction in the power consumption and heat dissipation is enabled by more than 80 percent as compared to the like-capacity 3.5-inch HDDs.
In addition, this eco-friendly device offers enhanced reliability and long-term access to data, photos, music, videos and other valuable user content. The company claims that the 640GB hard drive should store up to 182,000 digital photos, 168,000 digital music files or 520 downloaded digital movies of high-definition video.
The Toshiba 2.5-inch HDD series will be available later this month. However, the price of the hard drive is not yet known.
